Business was bad, and he finds it hard to switch online. All decks have gone through extensive QC checks and are in perfect condition. Unfortunately due to hoarders and speculators, the price of Under the Skin series has now bloated up. Please note that this price was not set by me. Moving forward, I hope that we can all work to get King Star decks at a more reasonable price and prevent this practice. To me, King Star and Acelion decks are beautiful and exquisite works of art, they are not gold bars to be treated like a commodity! ❓I actually don't encourage anyone to get this, unless you really want to. Only for true cardistry connoisseurs, and collectors of unique & exotic decks. 🌟 From Greek mythology, Medea is a great sorceress and potions master who is best known for her role in the myth of Jason and the Argonauts. While her parentage is often disputed, typically her father is King Aeetes of Colchis. She is the granddaughter of the Titan of the Sun, Helios, making her the niece and pseudo-apprentice of the famous sorceress Circe. Her blood runs rich with familial magic, and like auntie Circe, she knew herbology and how to manufacture tinctures, poisons, and potions. Some sources also indicate she was a priestess of a great Greek witch Goddess. 🌟 Her birthplace of Colchis is fundamental to her character. The intended Greek audience of the time would have interpreted this as Medea being a distant outsider, an other. Colchis was to the far east of the Greeks, making Medea ethnically and culturally foreign. She had all of the presuppositions and prejudices against her of being barbarian and Persian. To the Greek mind, the east was the origin of magic, and Medea carried this association and long tradition of mysticism, otherness, and obscurity with her. It has been suggested that Medea, with her knowledge of the magical properties of plants, first brought herbalism and medicine from the east to the west. 🌟 Like most Greek figures, Medea’s lineage is contested. The debate over Medea’s family tree and cultural origin is essentially an ontological one, in that the different potential lineages adjust her level of divinity and/or mortality. While some sources have her as a goddess, as the direct descendent of Helios, others see her as throughly mortal, easily influenced by other players in the Greek pantheon. This difference is vital as it alters the nature of her magical abilities, toggling them between inherent goddess powers versus learned skills. The standard interpretation of Medea, however, is that she is a powerful mortal woman, whose abilities come through deep knowledge and a technical adeptness in the mystic arts. 🌟 Medea was the prototype of the “woman behind the man”. As a powerful figure whose knowledge, support, and influence lead to the success of a lesser man, Medea has been largely eclipsed by the one she assisted. As the myth of Jason and the Argonauts goes, Jason is on a quest to retrieve the mystical Golden Fleece, an essentially political object which will allow him to take his place on the throne of Colchis. How else does a King get his crown but for the behind the scenes maneuvering of his Queen? Jason would have been unable to successfully obtain his throne if not for the magic and mastery of Medea. 🌟 The myth is fairly transparent in this regard. Medea falls in love with Jason, and offers to help him on his quest, with the caveat of nuptials post his triumph. In typical mythic fashion, Jason has a series of tasks he must complete in order to secure his flaxen North Face. She provides him a fireproofing ointment for his first task, a moment of clairvoyant clarity for his second, and some Schedule I narcotics for his third. After successfully obtaining the Golden Fleece, the two sail away and are married. Later myths have detailed the birth of their children, as well as Jason and Medea’s eventual divorce. These unfortunately portray Medea as a scorned lover full of revenge, who kills her children to spite Jason. In other myths, Medea retains her magic, strength, and chaotic femininity. 🌟 Medea is representative of the long history of the marginalization of “otherness”, seen through her birthplace in the east and her rejection of classic Greek notions of gender. Like an outsider, Medea does not easily fit the mold of what Greeks understood women to be. On the one hand, she’s secretive, manipulative, and dabbles in poisons, all understood as fundamentally feminine (similar to Morgan le Fay #85). On the other, she’s highly adept and intelligent, which the Greeks saw as a masculine trait. As a foreigner and outsider, Medea is able to justify these two extremes, creating a new type of identity to the Greek mind. Along with her vast knowledge of plants, poisons, and magic, Medea is truly a figure worthy of admiration, and not just as “the witch that helped Jason”. 🌟 The fascination with the “east” (from the Eurocentric world view) that Medea embodies is still existent today. The mythological birthplace of magic and the sun, the “east” has always been seen as the spiritual heart of the west, a trope we will see later in this series through certain metaphysicists, alchemists, and theosophists. It is here that western ideals and notions of principles like gender are deconstructed. In this way, Medea asks us to question what we think we know, and cautions us against overzealous boundaries which prevent the transition of knowledge, people, and culture.
