Description

Big Splash @ East Coast Park (1980's / 1990's rare vintage early Singapore Postcard) Big Splash @ East Coast Park [Photo #1 - #3] The $6 million Big Splash was built on reclaimed land in the new East Coast Park and opened in July 1977. In 2006 it closed for major redevelopment. When it reopened as Playground @ Big Splash in March 2008, the iconic water slides and pools were gone! It was very soon followed by a Look-Alike Mitsukoshi Garden @ Jurong {see sample Photo #4] built at a cost of $10 million and opened in April 1979. (Note the placement of the High & Low Slides - they were juxtaposed, though the colours remained in the same order. One simple way to differentiate between them is the present or absent of the tall round tower beside the Slides.) In June 1983, the Garden was sold to West Overseas, a Japanese firm which owned a restaurant chain in Kyushu. Following renovation works to add new facilities such as a gymnasium and more food outlets, the aquatic centre was reopened as the C N West Leisure Park later that year.
