Used Honda City Cars for Sale in Singapore

The Honda City is a subcompact saloon designed for buyers that would have otherwise bought a Honda Jazz/Fit, but require a little more space in the back. When originally launched back in 1981, it was Honda’s smallest car that was not in the kei class regulations.

As with most cars, it gradually ballooned in size over time, eventually gaining a boot and morphing into the City we can recognise some time in the mid-90s, with the introduction of the 3A/SX generation City.

Used Honda City Specs:

You’d be hard-pressed to find any Honda City on the roads, and by association, for sale, pre-1995. The earliest examples that you can still buy are the 3A/SX generation City models, which are built towards the later stages of its lifespan.

These cars, which were built from 1996-2002, were based on the Civic of their era. Power came from a 1.5-litre D series 4 cylinder engine with around 100bhp. They were the first cars to be built at a new Honda plant in Thailand, with up to 70% of componentry fabricated locally. Several parts were still being manufactured in Japan, but have had clever design and engineering built into them for more efficient shipment - the bumpers for instance, were built in 3 segments to facilitate transportation!

For MY1999, this generation had a mild facelift, which did away with the 3 piece front bumpers, for a single unit. That alteration required Honda to redesign the headlights too. No mechanical modifications were made - this revision is purely cosmetic.

The GD/GE City was launched in 2002 as a replacement for the 3A/SX City. Early cars had non-VTEC engines designed for maximum efficiency, though Honda revised the engine lineup with a range of 1.3 and 1.5-litre, VTEC-equipped 4 pots halfway through the car’s lifecycle. With the addition of these new power plants came a new gearbox, in the form of a 7-speed Multimatic CVT automatic transmission.

For MY2006, the car received a facelift. A bulkier front and rear end, as well as new headlights, were part of the revisions. The car gained new trim colour options as well as an armrest. Unlike the 3A/SX facelift though, there were mechanical revisions to the oily bits - an altered intake manifold was added for better efficiency!

In 2008, Honda unveiled the GM2/3 Honda City. Honda approached the styling of this generation very differently to prior cars. The car is unashamedly a saloon, with a lower roof and longer overhangs more reminiscent of bigger saloons. In 2011, the car received a new front grille design, front and rear bumpers, tail lamps, wheels, and an eco-driving indicator. Dual front airbags have also been added to all models in the line-up.

In 2014, the GM4/5/6/7 City was released. You can buy this car from the authorised distributor in 2 different trim levels, or from parallel importers as a hybrid too. Stylistically, these cars were an evolution over their predecessors. In 2017, Honda added LED front and rear lamps, and a restyled grille that apes the one fitted to its larger Civic sibling.

It was replaced in 2019 by GN City. Despite its smaller exterior dimensions, Honda claims the City actually has more legroom than the Fit/Jazz, HRV/Vezel that it shares its oily bits with. An additional engine option has been made available, in the form of a turbocharged 1.0litre 3 cylinder engine. If you are after a punchier drive, a hybrid variant is available, with a combined 205bhp. Still, that power will not impact the economy - these cars will still do 17.8 km/l!

Finding The One For You:

GD/GE City models are COE cars. Poor initial sales figures mean that these cars are hard to come by on the second-hand market. Most examples would have had their interiors and infotainment systems replaced with aftermarket units to keep up with modern demands.

GM2/3 City models are increasingly becoming COE cars. Early cars have crossed the decade mark, with later ones needing a revalidated COE at some point in the not too distant future. As the 2014 replacement for this generation of City builds on the basic design principles, if you are after a Honda that looks a lot younger than it really is, you cannot go wrong with the GM2/3 City.

CM4/5/6/7 City models are on their original COEs. Trim-wise, you’d expect AD cars to still sport factory equipment. PI cars, however, may have had new interiors and infotainment systems installed by the aftermarket in a bid to lower the original OMV when it came time to register the car.

GN City models can be had for upwards of $103,000.
